Pets4Life Louisville: 2025 — A Year of Impact

In 2025, Pets4Life Louisville didn’t just grow — we deepened.

We deepened our presence in neighborhoods where access to veterinary care has long been out of reach.
We deepened partnerships with organizations working toward real, systemic solutions.
And we deepened our understanding of what it truly takes to keep pets healthy and families together.

At the heart of our work is a simple belief: pet retention is a social justice issue. People love their pets. What they often lack is access — to affordable care, reliable information, transportation, and systems that actually work for them.

A Year of Growth, Trust, and Community-Led Solutions

In May 2025, Pets4Life Louisville celebrated 10 years as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit — marking a decade of evolution from a small grassroots effort into a trusted, community-based organization serving Louisville’s most underserved neighborhoods.

That growth was fueled by meaningful investment and collaboration.

In 2025, we entered Phase II of the $300,000 PetSmart Charities Incubator Grant, transitioning from research to action by launching community-designed veterinary solutions in the 40210 zip code, including the Park Hill and California neighborhoods. This work centers the voices of pet families and responds directly to the barriers they face.

We were also honored to receive philanthropic support from partners like the Jeff Wyler Automotive Family’s “50 for 50” initiative, Meijer Store 166, and many individual donors who believe in prevention over crisis response.

Beyond financial support, our community showed up in powerful ways — contributing over $70,000 in in-kind support, donated space, professional expertise, and nearly 1,000 volunteer hours from 67 active volunteers and staff.

Where the Work Happened

In 2025, Pets4Life hosted 37 pet resource events and 13 veterinary care events, meeting families where they already live, gather, and trust.

Our three neighborhood Petcare Hubs — located at the California Community Center, Park Hill, and The Lord’s Kitchen — continued to serve as consistent access points for food, supplies, education, and connection to care. These hubs aren’t just distribution sites; they are relationship-building spaces where conversations lead to long-term change.

We also expanded prevention-focused initiatives like Snips & Chips and the Complete Fix Program, helping families access spay/neuter surgery, vaccines, microchips, and deworming at a fraction of the typical cost — removing financial barriers that too often delay or prevent care.

Community Listening and Collaboration

In October, we convened a Community Partner Conversation with leaders from animal welfare, housing, and human services to tackle the hard truths: transportation barriers, emergency care costs, housing restrictions, and the ripple effects these challenges have on pets and families alike.

And during the holidays, we leaned into trust-building — hosting a Parkway Place Home Goods Giveaway that supported 125 families. Sometimes impact starts with meeting immediate needs and showing up without conditions.

2025, By the Numbers

Because the need isn’t theoretical — it’s measurable.

These aren’t feel-good statistics.
They represent real pets, real families, and real barriers.

In 2025, Pets4Life Louisville:

  • Helped 3,036 pets with food, supplies, veterinary care, and spay/neuter support
  • Provided veterinary care to 503 pets, many of whom had never seen a veterinarian before
  • Supported 2,533 pets at three neighborhood Petcare Hubs
  • Distributed 10,309 pounds of pet food, along with essential supplies
  • Assisted or referred 111 spay/neuters, directly preventing future litters and reducing shelter intake
  • Delivered vaccines, microchips, deworming, and preventative care to pets at highest risk
  • Responded to hundreds of one-on-one requests for help navigating appointments, transportation, and follow-up care

These numbers matter because most of these pets would not have received care otherwise. Not because their families don’t care — but because access is expensive, confusing, and often out of reach.

The Reality We Can’t Ignore

Here’s what 2025 made undeniably clear:

People are not failing their pets.
Systems are failing people.

Rage scrolling thrives on blame.
Our work is about solutions.

When care is accessible, affordable, and delivered with dignity, families rise to the occasion. Pets stay healthy. Preventable disease declines. Shelters feel the impact downstream.

That’s not charity.
That’s prevention.

Looking Ahead to 2026

In 2026, Pets4Life Louisville is doubling down on what works:

  • Sustainable veterinary care models focused on early intervention
  • Deep, neighborhood-based partnerships
  • A new website designed to better serve pet families and streamline access to help
  • Systems that don’t require people to jump through hoops just to do the right thing

The need isn’t going away — but neither are we.

Our 2026 Theme

People don’t fail their pets.
Systems fail people.
Prevention starts with access.

Thank you for standing with us, believing in this work, and helping us build a future where care is possible — regardless of zip code or income. 🐾

🐾 Celebrating Our 2025 Mission Partners

2025 was a year built on relationships, trust, and collaboration — and our Mission Partner Program was at the heart of it all.

This year, 40 nonprofits, government agencies, businesses, clinics, and community groups stepped up to partner with Pets4Life Louisville. Some were big. Some were small. All were essential. Together, we showed what’s possible when organizations work with one another to support pet families who are struggling not just with pet care, but with basic needs too.

Our Mission Partners helped us bring pet wellness services directly into underserved neighborhoods, meet people where they are, and keep pets with the families who love them. That’s impact. That’s trust. That’s community.

🐶 What Is a Pets4Life Mission Partner?

A Mission Partner is any business, organization, or group that partners with Pets4Life Louisville to help fulfill our mission of providing accessible pet wellness care to underserved pet owners in the Louisville community.

There are many ways to partner — and every one of them matters.

Ways to Partner With Pets4Life

🐶 Vet Clinics & Hospitals
Select a clinic date and provide volunteer veterinarians and techs for one of our vaccine or wellness clinics. Your whole team can work together to help pets who otherwise would not have access to care — an incredible way to give back.

🐾 Animal & Community Nonprofits
Join us at clinics or events by providing pet food, supplies, education, or people-focused services. Together, we support the whole family — pets and people.

🏢 Corporate Sponsors
Sponsor a clinic, provide volunteers, or donate resources. Because Pets4Life is a small, all-volunteer organization, 100% of donations go directly to helping animals — something employees love to be part of.

🐕 Pet Services & Pet Businesses
Dog park bars, groomers, trainers, and pet retailers can host microchip clinics, fundraisers, or awareness events that help families keep their Pets4Life.

🍽️ Small Local Businesses
Restaurants, bars, and shops can host fundraising nights, pet food drives, Angel Trees, or holiday photo events (like Pictures with Santa 🐶🎅).

🎓 Schools, Scouts & Youth Groups
Students working on service hours, Gold Awards, or Eagle Scout projects can volunteer at clinics or lead food and supply drives that make a real difference.

To every Mission Partner who showed up in 2025:
Thank you for trusting us.
Thank you for collaborating instead of competing.
Thank you for doing the work — often quietly — to help pets and people stay together.

If you’re interested in becoming a 2026 Mission Partner, we’d love to build something meaningful together. Please complete this form:

🐾 Listening, Learning & Partnering: Highlights from Our Community Partner Conversation

On October 16th, Pets4Life Louisville hosted a Community Partner Conversation at the California Community Center — a gathering designed to listen, learn, and connect with people and organizations who care deeply about pets and families in Louisville’s 40210 neighborhood.

This event was part of our ongoing work supported through the PetSmart Charities Incubator Grant, which is helping us co-create new solutions for improving access to veterinary care in historically underserved neighborhoods. Over the past two years, we’ve conducted surveys, interviews, and multiple focus groups with residents in 40210. This Community Partner Conversation was an important next step: bringing together the people who serve this community every day so we can learn from their insights and collaborate more intentionally.

🌟 Who Was in the Room

We were honored to welcome 14 attendees representing a diverse mix of organizations and lived experiences. Leaders from the Kentucky Humane Society, Metro Animal Services, Metro Housing Authority, and several nonprofit organizations including My Dog Eats First and Spay Anyway, joined community members and Pets4Life Louisville team members.

Although participants came from different backgrounds, the atmosphere was warm, open, and unified. People listened to one another with respect, nodded in agreement, and often leaned in to show support. Even when the conversation touched on sensitive topics like racial barriers, stereotypes, and systemic inequities, the discussion remained thoughtful and authentic.

It was clear that everyone shared the same goal:
Make pet care more accessible, sustainable, and community-centered in Louisville’s West End.

What We Heard: Key Themes from the Conversation

1. Barriers to Veterinary Care Are Significant and Overlapping

Participants consistently highlighted the same core challenges faced by pet families in 40210 (and similar communities):

  • Cost of veterinary care — especially emergency care
  • Lack of transportation and no pet-friendly bus system
  • Limited local options, especially since several clinics have closed
  • Housing barriers — pet fees, ESA documentation, and restrictive landlord policies

These issues don’t exist in isolation; together, they create a cycle that can force families to delay care, rely on informal solutions, or face heartbreaking decisions.

2. Preventive Services Have Improved — But Emergency Care Is Still Out of Reach

Partners praised the progress made through local vaccination clinics, spay/neuter resources, and community pop-ups. But they emphasized that emergency and urgent care remain the biggest unmet need, leaving families with few — if any — affordable options when something goes wrong.

One participant shared that many pet owners simply “wait and hope the problem goes away” because urgent care is too expensive or too far away.

3. Transportation Remains a Major Barrier

Only a small number of residents in focus groups reported having access to a personal vehicle. Without pet-friendly public transit, families rely on:

  • Walking
  • Asking neighbors for rides
  • Uber Pets (when they can afford it and if they have phone access)

Several partners noted that even reaching a “walk-in” clinic like the one in Shively can require hours of waiting, which is especially difficult for residents juggling jobs, childcare, medical needs, or mobility limitations.

4. Education and Clear Communication Are Essential

Participants emphasized that access isn’t just about affordability — it’s also about information:

  • How do residents find out about clinics?
  • How far in advance do they need to prepare?
  • What services will be offered?
  • How much will it cost?

Because many residents have unstable phone service, limited data, or low digital literacy, face-to-face communication remains the most effective outreach method. Flyers, door hangers, and trusted word-of-mouth networks play a crucial role.

5. Trust Comes From Showing Up

Our partners unanimously agreed that one of Pets4Life’s greatest strengths is our physical presence — being in neighborhoods, talking with families directly, and building relationships over time. This builds trust, helps us understand needs in real time, and ensures services feel accessible rather than intimidating.

6. Collaboration Is the Path Forward

The most inspiring part of the evening was the shared desire for deeper collaboration. Participants emphasized:

  • The importance of cross-organization partnerships
  • Combining human services with pet services
  • Creating programs that are culturally informed and community-driven
  • Working together to build long-term, sustainable solutions

Nearly every attendee expressed interest in staying connected and finding new ways to support one another’s work.

🚀 Where We Go From Here

The ideas shared during the Community Partner Conversation will directly shape Pets4Life’s future plans, which includes:

  • A Virtual Petcare Hub for pet-related support
  • Three neighborhood-based Petcare Hub Locations
  • Ultra–low-cost veterinary services with advance notice so families can prepare
  • A trust-based eligibility model
  • Community-led workshops, pop-ups, and training events

But most importantly, this event reaffirmed that the future of this work must be co-created — with partners, community members, and organizations who understand the neighborhood’s strengths and challenges.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who joined us.
Your compassion, honesty, and commitment will help move us closer to a future where every pet — and every family — has access to the care they deserve.

Celebrating Community Generosity: Pets4Life Louisville Selected for Jeff Wyler’s 50 for 50 Initiative

In early October, Pets4Life Louisville received an extraordinary honor that left our entire team feeling grateful, energized, and truly seen. As part of the Jeff Wyler Automotive Family’s 50th Anniversary celebration, their foundation selected 50 animal shelters and rescues to receive a $1,000 gift — one for each year they’ve served the community. We are proud to share that Pets4Life Louisville was chosen as one of their 50 for 50 recipients.

With so many deserving animal organizations across Kentucky and Ohio, being selected means more than words can express. This recognition validates the heart of our mission: strengthening the human–animal bond by ensuring families in underserved communities have access to essential pet care, resources, and support. The Jeff Wyler Foundation’s gift directly fuels this work — from vaccines and spay/neuter assistance to pet food, collars, leashes, and more.

A Joyful Celebration at Mercedes-Benz of Louisville

We were invited to celebrate at the Mercedes-Benz of Louisville location as Jeff Wyler continues their anniversary tour across all 23 dealership locations. The atmosphere was full of energy and appreciation, centered on honoring employees, thanking customers, and giving back to the communities who helped shape their 50-year legacy.

During the celebration, we also had the opportunity to meet the wonderful team from Tier Haven Rescue — another organization selected for the 50 for 50 initiative. In just a short time together, it was clear how deeply our missions align, especially around supporting vulnerable pets and preserving the powerful human–animal bond. We hope this is the beginning of future collaboration.

Gratitude That Goes Far Beyond a Gift

The generosity of the Jeff Wyler Foundation is more than a donation — it’s a statement that communities thrive when businesses invest in compassion and care. Their commitment to uplifting local organizations is helping create a ripple effect of positive change for pets and the people who love them.

On behalf of our team, volunteers, partners, and the pet families we serve: thank you for believing in the work we do. This gift will have a real impact on families who often have nowhere else to turn.

We are honored to be part of the 50 for 50 celebration — and we wish the entire Jeff Wyler Automotive Family a heartfelt congratulations on 50 remarkable years. Here’s to the next 50, filled with even more community, connection, and kindness.

PETS4LIFE LOUISVILLE RECEIVES $300,000 GRANT FROM PETSMART CHARITIES TO EXPAND ACCESSIBLE VETERINARY CARE IN HISTORICALLY EXCLUDED COMMUNITIES

October 21, 2025 — Louisville, KY – Pets4Life Louisville has been awarded a $300,000 grant from PetSmart Charities® to address barriers in accessing veterinary care in the Park Hill and California neighborhoods within Louisville’s 40210 zip code.

Rising costs combined with geographical, cultural and other barriers have left many families shut out of the veterinary care system altogether. The Incubator grant program supports innovative and culturally relevant veterinary programs targeted toward historically excluded communities across the U.S.

While 70% of American households include pets, access to basic veterinary services has not kept pace.  Pets are universally considered important family members and keeping them together requires resources that are often missing. This is particularly felt in many underserved communities where not only cost, but geography and systemic inequities have left veterinary care beyond reach. Early in 2023, PetSmart Charities, the top funder of animal welfare in the country, committed $100 million over the next five years toward improving access to veterinary care. The Incubator grants focus on historically excluded communities, many of which lack access to community support, including veterinary services. Pets4Life Louisville, one of only eleven 2024 Incubator grantees, spent its first year building trust and partnerships within 40210. Now, in phase two, the organization is launching community-designed veterinary solutions in collaboration with pet families, partners, and local changemakers.

“For families in West Louisville, pets provide comfort, love, and stability—yet too often, even basic veterinary care is out of reach,” said Karen Mujica, Executive Director of Pets4Life Louisville. “With support from PetSmart Charities, we’re introducing a Pet Mutual Aid model that brings neighbors, nonprofits, and local partners together. The goal is simple but powerful: no family should be forced to surrender a beloved pet because of food insecurity, lack of supplies, or preventable health issues. It means fewer emergencies, healthier pets, and stronger communities where no one, and no pet, is left behind.”

“Most people today consider pets to be family, yet we now know more than half of pet parents have skipped or declined veterinary care, with many more who haven’t been able to access it at all,” said Kate Atema, director of community grants & initiatives at PetSmart Charities. “This issue affects families in nearly every community across the U.S. — but becomes even more challenging for families living in places where other resources are also difficult to access. We’re proud to support partners that work hard to overcome obstacles to veterinary care and collaborate with local communities to co-create unique solutions for their pets.”

So far this year, Pets4Life Louisville has supported more than 1,600 pets in the 40210 community with food, supplies, and other essentials, while also delivering veterinary care to over 230 pets through outreach and pop-up clinics. Upcoming opportunities for local pet families include a Pet Resource Day on Saturday, October 25, from 2:00–3:00 p.m. and a Vaccine Clinic on Sunday, October 26, from 1:00–3:00 p.m., at the California Community Center, 1600 St. Catherine Street.

Through this work, hundreds of families in West Louisville have been able to keep their pets healthy, safe, and at home. Each success story—whether it’s a pet receiving vaccines, a family accessing food and supplies, or a beloved animal avoiding surrender—shows the real difference this grant is making. Pets4Life invites the community to join this grassroots movement to keep pets and families together. Learn how you can help at pets4lifelouisville.org.

🎉 Happy 10-Year Anniversary, Pets4Life Louisville! 🎉

On May 15, 2015, we officially became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit—our IRS letter arrived, and our journey began. Like many grassroots organizations, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. There were starts and stops, and it wasn’t until late 2017 that our programming truly got off the ground.

But from day one, we worked with partners.

Our first-ever pilot event was held with Saving Sunny, where we provided vet care to around 50 pets. That day set the tone for what Pets4Life would become: collaborative, community-based, and focused on keeping pets and people together.

In 2018 and 2019, My Dog Eats First became a crucial partner. Their support and belief in our mission helped shape our early path—and honestly, without them, Pets4Life might not be here today.

When COVID-19 hit, we paused briefly—but we didn’t stop. We shifted to a new service model that allowed us to keep reaching pet families safely. And by 2022–2023, we were in a period of regrowth, expanding our outreach through Louisville Parks and Recreation Community Centers.

But we also knew something: our volunteer-based model had limits. To grow, we needed more.

In 2024, everything changed. We were selected as one of only 11 organizations nationwide to receive a PetSmart Charities Incubator Grant. This transformative support is helping us build a sustainable future, one where we can continue serving pets—and their people—for decades to come.

We may not have the biggest social media following. We might still be unknown to many.
But what keeps us going is knowing that we’re making a real difference, one pet family at a time.

Thank you to everyone—partners, donors, volunteers, and friends—who has walked alongside us on this journey. Your support helps people keep their Pets4Life. 💛

Here’s to the next 10 years. 🐾

Listening First: What We Learned in Phase I of Petsmart Incubator Grant

At Pets4Life Louisville, we believe in starting with compassion, curiosity, and connection. As we began our work in the 40210 zip code—an area that has long been underserved and overlooked—we knew we needed to take our time and listen first.

This past year, with support from PetSmart Charities and the Institute for Human-Animal Connection (IHAC), we spent several months holding focus groups, conducting surveys, and simply showing up. We spoke with over 200 community members and asked them about their pets, their challenges, and their hopes. What we heard was honest, emotional, and deeply motivating.

What We Heard

🐾 Pets are family.
More than 80% of the people we surveyed are pet owners, and most described their pets as sources of comfort, love, and joy. But many also shared the pain and stress of not being able to provide the care their pets need.

🚧 Barriers are real and complex.
High costs, lack of transportation, limited internet access, and few nearby vet clinics all make basic pet care feel out of reach. Many families said they simply don’t know where to go for help—or they know, but they can’t get there.

📚 People want to learn.
The top three pet topics community members want more information about? Behavioral training, pet nutrition, and pet insurance. Folks want to care for their pets—they just need tools, support, and a chance.

🏘️ Safety is a shared concern.
Aggressive or stray animals in the neighborhood were mentioned often. Pet families expressed a desire for help managing pet behavior and improving safety for everyone in the community.

No Quick Fixes—But Real Hope

If we’ve learned anything, it’s this: there are no shortcuts to real, sustainable change. It takes time. It takes trust. It takes being present—not just once, but again and again.

We aren’t here to “fix” communities. We’re here to walk alongside them. We’re here to listen, to learn, and to co-create solutions that actually work for the people who live there. That means showing up with free pet food, pop-up clinics, friendly faces—and a lot of patience.

We Need People Like You

As we move into the next phase of our work in 40210, we need help—not just from animal lovers, but from people who are ready to get out of their comfort zones and stand beside pet families in real, tangible ways.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Join our team of changemakers. We need volunteers and partners who want to make a difference one-on-one, family by family, pet by pet.
  • Spread the word. We’re doing powerful work behind the scenes, but we need more eyes on it. Follow us on Facebook, invite your friends, and help us grow our community so we can reach more people and pets in need.

💙 We believe in a future where every pet is cared for and every family feels supported—but we can’t get there alone.

If you’re ready to be part of something real, something rooted in love and community, we’d love to hear from you.
